Within the Urban and Landscape workshop, the student of the Master in Urban Vision & Architectural Design Rina Otabe, worked on “Water Index”, an investigation on floods, water drainage, and water runoff in Milan and the broader Lombardy region, using sophisticated data visualisation to propose strategic opportunities and possibilities.

Using Milan as a case study, the workshop critically examines the city’s trajectory, highlighting the prevalence of privatised Urban Regeneration projects despite a communicated public environmental vision. Milan’s evolving landscape reflects a fragile ecological footprint, prompting the workshop to advocate for a transdisciplinary lens, and to potentially export Milan’s transformative growth as a model for ecological urban metabolism.
The workshop focuses on three dimensions: defining an urban strategy for ecological challenges, identifying new methods and techniques, and designing dynamic aesthetics. Rita examined groundwater and surface water reintegration issues, including damages to infrastructure and soil, by overlaying various types of information on the map and seeking relationships among them. In doing so, she used different programmes, from Grasshopper to Rhino and Illustrator. Through this work, she managed to decode the ecological and social dynamics of Milan, contributing to the reassessment of urban strategies and the creation of urban spaces with lasting impact.
