In collaboration with Resilient Communities, Italian Pavilion at the 17. International Exhibition of Architecture at La Biennale di Venezia
On occasion of Envisioning and Architectural Design workshop, students analysed four main emergency situations: flood, earthquake, epidemic and tsunami. Starting from these studies, they developed a project that could help during the most dangerous situations and, at the same time, satisfy leisure aspects
“Up in the Air” is a modular PVC or fabric material system that can inflate to obtain different shapes and perform different functions. Each shape is generated by the amount of air inside, which defines the functions that take place inside, more the structure is inflated more the situation is dangerous.

It is a reversible, flexible and interchangeable system, which is placed on the roof and inflated depending on the required function. Once allocated, these structures create a visual connection between all roofs. In an extreme emergency, the inflated spaces are connected by a tube and can fly off creating a new unified roof.
The structures fit any type of roof and can be placed on both public and private buildings, they can host large numbers of people.
