As part of the Design of Spaces workshop in collaboration with COIMA, students from the Masters in Interior & Living Design and Urban Vision & Architectural Design — Anastasia Eggler, Leila Palma, Maria Nasr and Ployroungrong Klumsiri — set out to revolutionise student housing by redefining communal living through the innovative concept of Layered Sharing.
Central to this vision is the idea of “Layers of Sharing,” a design approach that unfolds across various scales within the buildings. The concept ensures that users can access private, semi-private, and public spaces at every stage, encapsulated by the title “Belonging at Every Level.” The design reimagines the space as a tool that empowers users to determine their own preferred degree of sharing and interaction.

At the micro level, the design begins with clusters of eight individual rooms on each floor, which converge around a central common living area. This layout fosters interaction and collaboration among immediate roommates. Expanding on this idea, every half-floor – composed of sixteen bedrooms – features a larger communal space, encouraging greater social engagement among residents.
At the macro level, each entire floor becomes a vibrant hub of connectivity, anchored by a spacious communal area designed to promote interaction and collaboration across a broader community of students. These large-scale shared spaces serve as focal points for exchanging ideas, experiences, and building meaningful connections.
The sense of interconnectedness is further enhanced by the architectural design: each floor’s communal area seamlessly integrates with its counterpart in the adjacent building through interconnected parcels. By embracing the Layered Sharing concept, the students redefined traditional notions of communal living, paving the way for a new era of interconnectedness and community engagement within student housing.
