Within the Envisioning workshop, the students of the Master in Interior & Living Design Xiaotong Zhang, Runzhou Gao and Sarang Yadav, designed “Aquamonastery”, a future family housing project about returning to nature.
The students created a residential area with the goal of giving people a chance to be independent, rest, have family time and experience nature, in a reality where cities are facing more and more problems (pollution, noise, pressure) along with technological and social transformations. Hence the idea of reconnecting with nature and water to live in tranquility, just like the monks’ lifestyle. In this way they combined monk’s lifestyle with water (conceived as a spiritual dimension) to form the Aquamonastery.

They settled on 6 basic functions of the house, which simultaneously take into account the basic needs and spiritual needs of human beings. In particular, they divided the house into two spaces: indoor and outdoor. The outdoor space has an open kitchen, a home garden and a dining area. Half of the dining area is on the water. Indoor, there is a yoga room, where to relax. In the central part of the house, you can find a shower room that in itself might be unusual but according to the monks’ idea by washing your body you also clean your mind. The upper area consists of four rooms, one room for each family and finally a living room. The whole trend of living rooms is to gradually go underwater.
