In the frame of the Envisioning and Architectural Design Workshop, Domus Academy students from the Master in Interior & Living Design and Master in Urban Vision & Architectural Design analysed the urgencies facing our domestic and urban environments, imagining fluid domestic territories, which are based on community driven, ecologically responsive strategies.
In the project Adapting Casa Rustici to Co-living the students Naz Pirhasoglu, Alara Demirag and Ilayda Karaarslan reflected on the case study of Casa Rustici – Giuseppe Terragni and Pietro Lingeri’s masterpiece – the well-known piece of architecture for the Milanese culture and a great reference for many designers.

The students – through an adaptive reuse approach – proposed to transform Casa Rustici into shared living with the goal to allow more residents between the age of 17 and 40. Co-living is beneficial because it would reduce the financial anxiety of the residents. They developed an interactive digital art room in the basement, enclosed glass terraces at the front façade, communal rooftop and shared lockers, working with a QR scanning system – from the first to the fifth floor. They also changed the function of the balconies enclosing and linking them with the stairs (creating a gym, a library and study spaces).
The project Adapting Casa Rustici to Co-living wanted to redefine the forms of living developing new strategies.
