Milan: a true laboratory of fashion, art, and design

Milano

Discover Milan’s cultural offering and all the initiatives our students take part in during the academic year.

Milano

Milan, the Lombardy capital and the epicentre of a vibrant cultural scene, is a dynamic city energised yearly by major international fashion and design events. Among these are Milan Fashion Week and Milan Design Week, during which the city transforms into a spectacular stage, ready to showcase new trends in fashion and design to the world. Milan is also unique due to its significant artistic and cultural heritage, displayed across museums, exhibitions, and galleries throughout the city and region. This extraordinary cultural offering, encompassing permanent exhibitions, high-profile temporary shows, and iconic festivals, gives Domus Academy students a unique opportunity to engage with a dynamic, inspiration-rich cultural landscape.

Our educational offering includes not only classroom lectures but also invaluable field experiences. Among the most significant initiatives annually scheduled in our academic calendar are:

  • Villa e Collezione Panza: Students from the Master in Interior & Living Design visited this 18th-century villa, renowned for its magnificent Italian-style garden and housing one of the world’s most celebrated contemporary art collections, along with prominent international exhibitions.
  • Museo Nazionale Scienza e della Tecnologia Leonardo da Vinci: Students from the Master in Interior & Living Design, the Master in Interaction Design, and the Master in Service Design visited one of Europe’s leading science and technology museums. Through the Experience Design & Design of Spaces workshop, they were also invited to redesign select interior spaces of the museum sustainably, respecting the building’s historical integrity and welcoming a diverse audience.
  • Exhibition “Yohji Yamamoto. Letter to the Future”: Thanks to the collaboration with Galleria 10 Corso Como, students from the Master in Fashion Design enjoyed one of the most critical fashion exhibitions of 2024: a showcase of garments by the acclaimed Japanese designer, who, through a play of shapes, cuts, and geometries, offered a glimpse into the future of the industry.
  • Fondazione Prada: The cultural institution led by Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli, dedicated to contemporary art, cinema, photography, philosophy, dance, and architecture, hosted students from the Master in Urban Vision & Architectural Design, providing them with an innovative perspective on relevant themes.
  • Triennale Milano: Students from the Master in Visual Brand Design engaged with one of the most prestigious international cultural institutions, which promotes culture as a point of convergence and addresses contemporary challenges through the languages of design, architecture, and the visual and performing arts. Each month, Triennale offers a rich program of art, design, architecture, and fashion exhibitions, along with performances, talks, and meetings. Students from the Master in Service Design and the Master in Business Design collaborated with Triennale Milano to analyse its public offering—products, services, communication strategies, customer experience, and national and international positioning—and to reframe the narrative around this multifunctional space, proposing ideas to foster a new dialogue across past, present, and future.
  • Pirelli HangarBicocca: Students from the Master in Interior & Living Design and the Master in Urban Vision & Architectural Design were guided through the exhibition space dedicated to modern and contemporary art in the Bicocca district of Milan.
  • Teatro La Scala: Milan’s premier opera house and one of the most prestigious globally welcomed students from the Master in Interior & Living Design.

Additional initiatives in Milan have also enriched the student experience, including notable exhibitions such as Ron Mueck and “Juergen Teller: I Need to Live” at Triennale Milano, as well as “Daniele Tamagni: Style Is Life” at Palazzo Morando, attended by students from the Master in Fashion Styling & Visual Merchandising, and the visit to the Flos Showroom in Milan by the Master in Product Design students.

Finally, among the high-value activities that took students beyond Milan were the “Walter Albini. Il talent, lo stilista” exhibition at the Museo del Tessuto in Prato and the Master in Business Design students’ visit to the Ferrari Museum in Maranello.

These are just a few of the countless educational initiatives organised each year for students at Domus Academy, Fashion and Design School in Milan.
