Domus Academy hosted a lecture by Usman Haque titled “Infrastructure for Participation”, which was delivered within the Experience Design Workshop.
The lecture was organized for the students attending the Master in Interaction Design and the Master in Service Design, in collaboration with Sclak.
The students attending the online workshop, 14 in total, from different part of the world (Colombia, Bulgaria, Israel, Italy, China, India, Brazil, Turkey) are working to design new solutions and experiences for the Post Pandemic City, 10 years from now.
Usman’s presentation was about the way people relate, interact and perceive the places that characterise our cities, and how a designer should absorb and transform those information to feed the design process.

Usman’s presentation was about the way people relate, interact and perceive the places that characterise our cities, and how a designer should absorb and transform those information to feed the design process.
From this, he made the point of designing for participation while activating environments through technology, which describes the works of his company, Umbrellium.
At first Usman explored the topic through a socio-political framework, and then guided the students in discovering a selection of his projects, from Blurble to Thingful and Umbrellium’s latest projects like Starling Crossing.
Usman Haque is currently Creative Director & Founding Partner at Umbrellium. Trained as an architect designing both physical environments and software systems, Usman launched the company in 2007 to transform how cities are designed and built.
Author of dozens of articles on cities, citizen participation and the internet of things, he is a recipient of Japan Media Arts Festival’s Excellence Prize, Asia Digital Art Award’s Grand Prize and a World Technology Award.
